Washington & Lee University - Mudd Center Postdoc

The Roger Mudd Center for Ethics seeks candidates for the 2023-2025 Mudd Center for Ethics Postdoctoral Fellowship. Postdoctoral fellows will be expected to teach three undergraduate courses during the year, typically including one course in the fall, one course in the winter, and one course in the 4-week spring term. At least two of these courses should align with the Mudd Center’s programmatic theme for the year. Courses are chosen in consultation with the Director. In addition, the Mudd Ethics Fellow will be expected to assist with administrative duties within the Mudd Center, participate in all Mudd Center activities, interact with and advise undergraduates affiliated with the Mudd Center, and help foster an interdisciplinary ethics community across the College, the Williams School of Commerce, Economics, and Politics, and the School of Law.

The appointment will be for two years, beginning on July 1, 2023 and ending on June 30, 2025. Washington and Lee, a private, liberal arts university with approximately 2200 students, is in Lexington, Virginia, a town of approximately 7000 people in the Valley of Virginia. One of the nation’s top liberal arts institutions, W&L is unique in having accredited programs in business administration, journalism, and accounting, as well as a School of Law. The Roger Mudd Center for Ethics was established in 2010 through a gift from esteemed journalist and W&L alumnus Roger Mudd. Qualifications
Applicants must have a focus on ethical issues arising in public or professional life. The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. with a focus on ethics and who has completed his or her Ph.D. by June of 2023. The candidate must be no more than three years from the awarding of his or her degree (i.e., June of 2020), although exceptions to this rule may be made in unusual circumstances. The university requires employees to become fully vaccinated for COVID-19, with one booster. New employees must provide proof of at least their first shot prior to the first day of employment. Individuals may seek a medical or a religious exemption to the vaccination requirement.
