The Department of Philosophy in the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Cincinnati invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor or tenured Associate Professor to begin in August 2024 with an Area of Specialization (AOS) in Ethics (theoretical, applied, or social/political), Philosophy of Mind/Cognitive Science, or Philosophy of Science (general, specific sciences, or philosophy of technology). Candidates must have an Area of Competence (AOC) in philosophical or ethical issues related to AI and will teach classes in AI as well as contribute to interdisciplinary efforts within the College related to AI. These interdisciplinary efforts will be supported by additional faculty hires across departments including Math and English. The standard teaching load is 2-2.
Our department values strong research programs, excellence in teaching, effective graduate mentoring, and collegial department service. Our department supports faculty pursuing public engagement and/or external grant funding. We are a PhD-granting department with strengths in philosophy of science, philosophy of cognitive science, and moral psychology; we are also cultivating strength in applied ethics and social philosophy. We comprise 12 full-time faculty, about 25 PhD students, and numerous affiliated faculty in other programs. The department houses the Center for Public Engagement with Science (PEWS) and has close connections to the Institute for Research in Sensing (IRiS), the Center for Cognition, Action, and Perception (CAP), and the new and growing Cincinnati Ethics Center.
