Tenure-track Assistant Professor -  University of Cincinnati

10/14/2023

The Department of Philosophy in the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Cincinnati invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor or tenured Associate Professor to begin in August 2024 with an Area of Specialization (AOS) in Ethics (theoretical, applied, or social/political), Philosophy of Mind/Cognitive Science, or Philosophy of Science (general, specific sciences, or philosophy of technology). Candidates must have an Area of Competence (AOC) in philosophical or ethical issues related to AI and will teach classes in AI as well as contribute to interdisciplinary efforts within the College related to AI. These interdisciplinary efforts will be supported by additional faculty hires across departments including Math and English. The standard teaching load is 2-2.
Our department values strong research programs, excellence in teaching, effective graduate mentoring, and collegial department service. Our department supports faculty pursuing public engagement and/or external grant funding.
We are a PhD-granting department with strengths in philosophy of science, philosophy of cognitive science, and moral psychology; we are also cultivating strength in applied ethics and social philosophy. We comprise 12 full-time faculty, about 25 PhD students, and numerous affiliated faculty in other programs. The department houses the Center for Public Engagement with Science (PEWS) and has close connections to the Institute for Research in Sensing (IRiS), the Center for Cognition, Action, and Perception (CAP), and the new and growing Cincinnati Ethics Center.
Essential Functions
  • Conduct and publish research in Philosophy in their AOS.
  • Teach courses in Philosophy, including introductory general education courses, upper-level undergraduate courses that serve the Philosophy BA program, and graduate seminars that serve the Philosophy PhD program.
  • Contribute to interdisciplinary efforts within the College related to AI.
  • Advise graduate students and supervise TAs.
  • Contribute service or committee work to department (such as the Undergraduate or Graduate Studies Committee), college (such as grant or award review committees), and profession (such as peer review for journals or service in professional associations).

 Minimum Requirements
  • A PhD in Philosophy or a closely related discipline
  • An Area of Specialization (AOS) in at least one of the following: Ethics (theoretical, applied, or social/political), Philosophy of Mind/Cognitive Science, or Philosophy of Science (general, specific sciences, or philosophy of technology).
  • An Area of Competence (AOC) in AI.
  • At least one semester teaching experience at the college or university level, either as instructor or teaching assistant.

Application Process
Applicants must apply online at https://jobs.uc.edu, requisition #94373. In addition to filling out the online application, candidates at the Assistant Professor level should upload as “additional documents”: a CV, cover letter, statement of research interests and plans, teaching dossier, and one writing sample, preferably as PDF files. Because the system does not manage confidential reference letters, candidates should arrange to have at least three confidential letters of recommendation sent via Interfolio or other dossier service, or by the letter writers themselves, to the Search Committee Chair at [email protected].

Candidates at the Associate Professor level need only upload a CV, cover letter, and the names of three people who can serve as references. References will not be contacted for letters until a later stage and you will be notified before they are contacted.
The University of Cincinnati, as a multi-national and culturally diverse university, is committed to providing an inclusive, equitable and diverse place of learning and employment. Review of applications will begin on November 6, 2023. First round interviews will be held via videoconference in December 2023. The position will remain open until filled.
