The ideal candidate will have a combination of university-level teaching experience, and research potential. We are seeking applicants with an earned or nearly complete doctorate in philosophy, with demonstrable qualifications in Technology Ethics, as related to Feminist Ethics and/or Disability Studies. Primary teaching duties include a course on Ethics, Science and Technology for computer science and software engineering majors, as well as general education. Depending on Philosophy Department teaching needs and the candidate’s teaching interests, the successful candidate would also teach some general education and major courses in philosophy. We currently have a rich set of course offerings related to the AOS, including Biomedical Ethics, Environmental Ethics, Philosophy of Technology, Robot Ethics, Philosophy of Internet, Technologies & Ethics of Warfare, and others. Preferred qualifications include: potential to develop external funding in AOS-related areas; willingness to participate in interdisciplinary programs overlapping with AOS, including course and program curriculum development; willingness to participate in Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl; willingness to teach courses in environmental ethics; and, willingness to develop online courses in the AOS. Cal Poly is primarily a teaching university. Our faculty are expected to balance teaching with an active program of research/professional development and participation in service activities at the department and college/university level. The typical teaching load is 12 units (three courses) per quarter, with a reduction in course load in each of the first two years to help establish an active program of research and professional development. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Initial appointment is for two years, subject to renewal. An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Philosophy or a closely related field by date of appointment is required. Department Information Currently the Philosophy Department, in the College of Liberal Arts, has 13 philosophy professors, two religious studies professors, and 13 lecturers most of whom teach nearly full-time. The department serves approximately 140 philosophy majors and 50 philosophy minors as well as students throughout the university in General Education offerings.
