FLSA: Exempt Posting Number: FRGV1436 Location: Edinburg, Texas Division/Organization: Provost - Academic Affairs Appointment Period for Non-Tenure Position: 3 years Tenure Status: Non Tenure Track FTE: 1.0 Scope of Job: We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley's diverse student body as a lecturer in Philosophy and Religious Studies beginning in the 2022-2023 academic year. We are a pluralistic and inclusive department that offers a major and a minor in Philosophy and a minor in Religious Studies. We seek an outstanding teacher who will not only inspire students to take more courses in both fields, but also to pursue a major in Philosophy and/or a minor in Religious Studies. The successful candidate will be qualified to teach any of the following introductory courses in philosophy: Introduction to Philosophy; Ethics, Happiness, and the Good Life; Race, Sexuality, and Class; and Critical Thinking. In addition, the successful candidate will also be qualified (possessing the equivalent to 18 graduate hours in Religious Studies) to teach one or more specializations within Religious Studies, such as the Nature of Religion, Indigenous Religions, World Religions, Borderlands Spirituality, Judaism, Latin American Liberation Theologies, etc. Since the philosophy department embraces UTRGV's vision of becoming a B3 (Bilingual, Bicultural, & Biliterate) University to better serve our 90% Hispanic student body, we request that candidates show how their experience, work, or teaching might support these priorities. Complete application includes: 1) a letter of interest 2) unofficial graduate transcripts, 3) curriculum vitae, 4) list of three references, and 5) a teaching portfolio (to be submitted as “Other Document”) that includes a teaching statement and sample syllabi for at least one of the above introductory courses in philosophy and for one course in religious studies. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
