The Department of Comparative Philosophy at Randolph College invites applications for a full time, tenure-track position, at the rank of Assistant Professor, focusing on ethics and/or the philosophies and thought traditions of Africa and/or Latin America.
Ours is a pluralistic department open to various approaches to philosophy. We teach students to grapple with their own habits of thought and those of others with the aim of critically analyzing assumptions, asking meaningful questions, and mapping landscapes of possible answers. We see comparison in philosophy as enlarging our vision and imagination and thus our capacity for negotiating difficult problems of self and society, which, ultimately, renders us capable of just engagement in the global public square. The hired candidate will be expected to teach a range of introductory courses through advanced undergraduate courses in ethics, the history of philosophy, and non-Western thought traditions. The ideal applicant will also strengthen interdisciplinary partnerships across the college in one or more of the following programs: African and African American Studies; Art and Art History; Data Science; Environmental Studies; Health and Well-being; Social Justice and Activism; and World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures. Teaching is central to faculty life at Randolph College. The College’s innovative TAKE2 curriculum includes four seven-week sessions in an academic year, with students typically taking two academic classes per seven-week session. Tenure-track faculty teach six courses per academic year, three per semester. In addition to teaching courses in the Comparative Philosophy department, the candidate would be expected to teach and advise yearly in Randolph College’s interdisciplinary “Life More Abundant” first year seminar. The responsibilities of this position also include engaging in scholarly activities, serving on college committees, participating in college service (such as coordinating our Ethics Bowl team), and assisting in the academic advising and continued development of the Comparative Philosophy program.
