California Lutheran University invites applications for a Lecturer in Philosophy with a focus in Ethics and Latin American Philosophy. The successful candidate should have a strong background (AOS) in Ethics, competence (AOS or AOC) in Latin American Philosophy, and be able to teach other courses in the department (an ability to teach Business Ethics, Ethics, Social Ethics, and Latin American Philosophy is required, and an ability to teach Feminism and/or Philosophy of Race and/or Oppression & Liberation is preferred). Teaching experience (and/or strong potential) and an interest in public and pre-college philosophy is desirable. The standard teaching load is four courses per semester and the successful candidate is expected to work with colleagues from other disciplines to participate in constructive dialogue on issues that we are facing in the 21st century by building upon sources from across intellectual streams. It is also expected that, after the first year of teaching, the person hired will take an active role in first-year advising.
• Provide academic instruction to students through lecture, lab, or performance courses. Create assignments and activities in one-on-one, classroom, and distance mediated instructional settings for development of cognitive abilities, communication skills, and higher order thinking skills among students. E
• Observe and evaluate student performance in meeting course objectives and student learning outcomes through assignments, projects, discussions, and examinations; provide feedback in a timely manner to student inquiries in class, online, or during established consultation office hours. E
• Maintain current, accurate records of course enrollment, attendance, student academic progress, course curriculum; prepare and submit grades, data, and reports related to course and student progress in a timely manner. E
• Provide a course syllabus to students in each class within the first week of the class, as outlined in the faculty handbook. E
• Adhere to the responsibilities related to teaching, advising and service, as outlined in the faculty handbook. E
• Attend and participate on committees and in department, division, campus, and University meetings. E
• Evening and weekend hours may be required. E
• Primary responsibilities for this position include teaching the following undergraduate courses (32 units): Ethics, Business Ethics, Social Ethics, Latin American Philosophy, and Feminism and/or Philosophy of Race and/or Oppression & Liberation. E

• Exhibit sensitivity to and understanding of the needs of students with disabilities
• Integrate current and emerging instructional delivery technologies into the learning process to enhance teaching and the educational experience
• Maintain professional standards that protect student confidentiality
• Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing using tact, patience, and courtesy
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships
• Work constructively with their colleagues and to treat faculty, staff, administrators, and students with respect and professionalism
• Analyze situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action
• Demonstrate commitment to professional excellence and continuous growth within subject field or discipline
• Satisfactorily fulfill a faculty member’s duties and responsibilities and making significant contributions to the University community.
Possession of an appropriate Master’s Degree in Philosophy.
• Possession of a Ph.D. in from an accredited institution. ABD will be considered.
• Aside from a strong background in Ethics and Latin American Philosophy, we prefer a candidate who is focused on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
• Aside from teaching Ethics and Latin American Philosophy, an ability to teach Social Ethics, and Business Ethics is required, and an ability to teach Feminism and/or Philosopy of Race and/or Oppression & Liberation is preferred.
Licenses and Other Requirements:
Detect to understand appropriate written correspondence; communicate clearly to exchange information in person and via the telephone or video; operate a computer and other office productivity machinery; stationary position for extended periods of time; move or transport light objects; position self to store and/or retrieve files.
Indoor classroom environment; subject to visiting a variety of classroom sites on campus.
Hiring Range $56,000-$70,000
