AOS: At least one of Kant, 19th-Century German Philosophy, 20th-Century Continental Philosophy, Philosophy of Language, Non-Western Philosophy, Philosophy of Race and Racism, Philosophy of Sex and Gender, and Feminist Philosophy

AOC: Open, preferably one of the above

Minimum teaching load of four courses/year over three quarters, graduate and undergraduate levels, and usual dissertation, committee, and advising responsibilities.

Qualifications

The department invites applications for a position as Assistant Professor, first or second term, from candidates specializing in any of the areas listed above. We seek a colleague with an ambitious research agenda yielding active and innovative scholarship, characterized by cogency of argument, knowledge of the literature, and originality of interpretation. Successful applicants will contribute to the scholarly community of the department and university, and have the ability or potential to be an excellent teacher in the university’s core curriculum, in introductory to advanced undergraduate courses in Philosophy, and in graduate courses related to their area of expertise. The expected start date for the position is July 1, 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter.

All requirements for receipt of a doctoral degree in Philosophy or related field must be completed by the start of the appointment.

Application Instructions

No applications or dossier materials will be accepted after 11 p.m. Central Time on October 15, 2021. Letters of recommendation will be accepted until November 1, 2021. Applicants are advised to request their letters as soon as possible (i.e., prior to submitting the final materials) to allow ample time for recommenders to upload their letters.

Required elements of the dossier are:
  • cover letter,
  • CV,
  • dissertation abstract,
  • research statement,
  • writing sample,
  • teaching statement,
  • three syllabi,
  • three letters of recommendation.

Optional elements are:
  • teaching evaluations, if available, are strongly encouraged,
  • an additional writing sample (no more than two writing samples are to be submitted, and if two are submitted the applicant should designate one as the primary sample),
  • up to two additional letters of recommendation.

Applicants may be asked to provide additional materials following the initial review. We anticipate conducting first round interviews in early December, and extended interviews of finalists in January or early February. (All first-round interviews will be conducted remotely. We expect to bring finalists to campus, unless conditions and the pandemic make that impossible. In either case, finalists should expect to give a presentation and be available for a day or two of meetings.)
