Assistant Professor (Tenure-track) -  The Macalester College Department of Philosophy

9/13/2023

The Macalester College Department of Philosophy invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin in the fall semester of 2024. The successful candidate should have a PhD in Philosophy (in hand or expected) and show potential for excellence in research and undergraduate teaching.
Area of specialization: Philosophy of Science (broadly construed). Area of competence: open, but candidate must have the ability to teach introductory logic.
The standard teaching load is five courses per year, with usual non-teaching duties expected. The first year normally carries a one-course reduction in teaching. Salary and benefits are competitive.
To apply, submit a cover letter, CV, writing sample, evidence of teaching effectiveness, three letters of recommendation, and a DEI statement (see below) to www.academicjobsonline.org. The evidence of teaching effectiveness should include a statement of teaching philosophy, at least two sample syllabi (preferably taught or assisted by the candidate), and sample course evaluations. Online applications only. Complete applications received by November 12, 2023 will be given full consideration. Questions about the position or application should be addressed to Samuel Asarnow ([email protected]).
At Macalester College, diversity, equity, and inclusion are central to our educational mission and values. We are committed to the institutional change required for visioning and realizing a more equitable and socially just college and society. We thus ask all candidates to address the following in their DEI statement (no more than three single-spaced pages): demonstrated activity and contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in their teaching, scholarship, service, and/or community engagement; and experience and vision regarding teaching and mentorship of students of multiple and diverse backgrounds, with attention to students who experience structural barriers that limit access to educational opportunities.
Macalester College is a highly selective, private liberal arts college in the vibrant and diverse Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area, which has a population of more than three million and is home to numerous colleges and universities, including the University of Minnesota. Macalester’s diverse student body comprises over 2000 undergraduates (14% international and 32% US students of color), who hail from 45 states and over 70 nations. The College maintains a longstanding commitment to academic excellence, with a special emphasis on internationalism, multiculturalism, and service to society. We are especially interested in applicants dedicated to excellence in teaching and research/creative activity within a liberal arts college community. As an Equal Opportunity employer supportive of affirmative efforts to achieve diversity among its faculty, Macalester College strongly encourages applicants from women, non-binary people, and members of historically underrepresented groups. International scholars will receive H-1B visa assistance if selected for this position. We acknowledge that Macalester College is located on the ancestral homeland of the Dakota people, who were forcibly exiled because of aggressive and persistent settler colonialism.
Please note that candidates who are invited for a campus interview will be required to complete faculty screening questions, and offers of employment are contingent upon a successful criminal background check at the time of offer.
