Position Summary:
The Philosophy Department at SUNY Geneseo, currently with 5 full-time faculty members, offers a major and minor in philosophy and contributes significantly to the College’s Honors program and general education programs. We have recently revised our entire curriculum around the development of skills via scaffolded course-embedded experiences; this revision was accompanied by the introduction of greater flexibility in the requirements for the major. We will also be introducing a new interdisciplinary minor in Ethics and Values in Society, with plans to develop an interdisciplinary major in Ethics. The department also has deep ties to the Women’s & Gender Studies program and many other interdisciplinary programs. The department offers an outreach program involving students teaching philosophy in local high schools, as well as a summer institute for high school students. We seek a colleague who will contribute to such innovative pedagogy and cocurricular engagements (including by applying for external grants), complement and extend existing departmental teaching strengths, pursue their own research agenda, and support the College’s mission as a public liberal arts college and its diversity goals. We seek candidates who will create a climate that helps us attract and is inclusive of all students, including students from historically underrepresented groups and students who have overcome personal challenges. Ability to teach in the area of philosophy of law, as well as philosophy of race and/or gender, is required. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience with or demonstrated interest in innovative pedagogy within philosophy (such as service learning, project-based learning, and extra- or co-curricular learning) and/or interdisciplinary teaching. The teaching load for this position will be three courses per term (with the option to teach during summer and winter intersession) and the position will involve departmental and college service. Courses to be taught will include legal reasoning, philosophy of law, philosophy of race and/or feminist philosophy, and other areas of the candidate’s expertise which complement the philosophy department’s needs. The college is implementing a new general education program; the successful candidate will also be expected to teach Philosophy courses (the above listed courses and/or additional courses of the candidate’s choosing) that contribute to some of the new general education categories, especially “Diversity, Pluralism, and Power” and “Contemporary Global Challenges”. Service will include academic advising and opportunities for innovative pedagogy. Required Qualifications: ● PhD in philosophy or related area completed prior to August 28, 2022 ● Experience or preparation to teach philosophy of law and/or legal reasoning ● Experience or preparation to teach philosophy of race and/or feminist philosophy ● Evidence of teaching effectiveness ● Evidence of an active research program in social/political/legal philosophy or with significant connections to social/political/legal philosophy ● Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion as well as the ability to establish and maintain positive learning environments for students and collaborative relationships with colleagues Preferred Qualifications: ● Experience or preparation to teach social and political philosophy ● Experience with innovative pedagogy (e.g. project-based learning, service learning, extracurricular or co-curricular learning, e.g. ethics bowl, philosophy in elementary or secondary schools, philosophy in prisons, etc.) ● Experience with interdisciplinary teaching ● Experience with curriculum development ● Experience with academic advising Mission Statement: We are a distinctive public liberal arts college that welcomes and inspires students to develop their knowledge and skills to build a better world.
