Description
The Department of Philosophy and the College of the University of Chicago seek an experienced teacher of Philosophy to help build on the strengths of its existing program. We are interested in candidates with a strong record of teaching Ancient Greek Philosophy, especially Ancient Greek Theoretical Philosophy, to undergraduates, with a preference for candidates with additional experience in teaching and/or ability to teach more broadly in the History of Philosophy, in Ethics, and in Metaphysics. The successful candidate will also be prepared to teach in the Humanities Core. Experience working with students on the preparation of BA and/or MA theses is also desirable. We invite applications for a position as an Assistant Instructional Professor of Philosophy to begin in academic year 2021-22, with an expected start date of September 1, 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter. This is not a tenure-track appointment. Initial appointment will be for a term of two years, with reappointment possible following successful review. Responsibilities include both teaching and service duties. Teaching consists of up to seven courses across three quarters in various areas of the Philosophy curriculum, and may include assignments in the College Core. The selected candidate will also be expected to take on appropriate service duties within the department, including advising BA and MA theses in their area of specialty. Instructional Professors of all ranks are expected to engage in regular professional development. Qualifications Applicants are required to have prior teaching experience at the college or post-secondary level, preferably at a North American institution. A PhD in Philosophy is required by the start date of the appointment.
