The Department of Philosophy at Southwestern University seeks a full-time, benefits-eligible Visiting Assistant Professor of Philosophy with an emphasis in Feminist Theory to begin August 2019. This is a one-year position, with a second and third year appointment contingent on satisfactory performance. We are particularly interested in applicants whose teaching and research includes Chicana, Black, or other non-white/western feminist traditions. Our department, while small, offers a broad, historically grounded philosophy program, which strives to model a range of interdisciplinary approaches to the teaching and study of philosophy, situating philosophical ideas in their social, political, and cultural contexts, while critically evaluating the methods and practices of contemporary thought. We are therefore seeking applicants interested in not only teaching specific courses in feminist theory but in broadly integrating feminist and other critical lenses on the western tradition across the curriculum. We are seeking an individual with a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion as intrinsic aspects of excellence in teaching, mentoring, and scholarship.
The annual courseload includes six sections of five separate undergraduate courses, including introductory and upper-level topics courses, with the repetition of many courses in subsequent two years. Courses are capped at 25 students. We welcome novel approaches to traditional classes, as well as ideas for new courses. This position includes opportunities for both. Qualifications include Ph.D. prior to appointment or ABD in Philosophy or a closely allied field. The successful candidate will demonstrate potential for interdisciplinary collaboration, including potential contributions to one or more of the university’s interdisciplinary degree programs (Feminist Studies, Environmental Studies, Race and Ethnicity Studies, Latin American and Border Studies, and International Studies). Evidence of excellence in undergraduate teaching is essential. Southwestern University is a selective undergraduate institution committed to a broad-based liberal arts, sciences, and fine arts education. Southwestern enrolls approximately 1500 students and maintains a student/faculty ratio of 12 to 1. Located in Georgetown, Texas, 28 miles north of downtown Austin, Southwestern is committed to fostering a diverse educational environment and encourages applications from members of groups traditionally underrepresented in academia. For information concerning the University, visit our website at www.southwestern.edu. The University will only accept application materials through Interfolio at XXXX. Qualified applicants should submit a CV, two letters of reference, writing sample, sample syllabi, and a letter of interest which explains the candidate’s approach to teaching at the undergraduate level, their experience with diversity issues, diverse students, and working in multicultural environments, and the relevance of philosophy to the contemporary world. The department will begin reviewing applications immediately and continue until the position is filled. Comments are closed.
