Assistant Professor, University of Nebraska at Omaha (AOS: Emerging Technologies, AI, Computing, Information Science, Cognitive Science, Consciousness)

10/22/2019

The Philosophy program at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO) seeks an Assistant Professor of Philosophy (tenure-track) with an AOS: Open (Emerging Technologies, A.I., Computing, Information Science,  Cognitive Science, Consciousness) and AOC: Open with an anticipated start date of August 17, 2020.  We are looking for a candidate who can build bridges across traditional disciplinary boundaries regarding the philosophical and ethical implications of emerging technologies, artificial intelligence and machine learning, computing and information science, or the nature of human and animal consciousness.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach a range of lower level and upper level courses that contribute to the general education curriculum and the Philosophy major.  The position carries a standard 3-3 teaching load, research, and service expectations.  The PhD in Philosophy is required before August 17, 2020.

UNO is a Doctoral/Research institution with over 15,000 students.  The Philosophy program at UNO offers three different concentrations within its Philosophy major: (i) Generalist; (ii) Ethics, Law, and Social-Political Philosophy; and (iii) Philosophy of Brain and Mind.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to engage with relevant researchers across the University of Nebraska system including researchers associated with UNO’s new HARP (Human-Aware AI, Machine-Learning, and Robotics Pavilion) initiative.

The UNO Mission:

As both a Metropolitan University of distinction and a Carnegie Doctoral Research Institution, the mission of UNO is to transform and improve the quality of life locally, nationally, and globally.

Our mission emphasizes the importance of diversity and inclusiveness with 37% of our students being first generation and 26% of our students being students of color.   UNO is also nationally recognized as a top college for Veterans.

Our mission also focuses on the importance of community engagement. In particular, UNO is home to the Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center (CEC). The CEC, the first facility of its kind in the United States, partners UNO resources with community needs and is home to more than 30 nonprofit, government, and UNO partner organizations.

UNO is also home to two major full-tuition financial need-based scholarship programs that make our high quality undergraduate education as broadly accessible as possible.

The Goodrich Scholarship Program was created almost 50 years ago to provide hard-working, academically proven students with financial need an opportunity for a quality education that they otherwise could not afford.  Of the approximately 230 current student scholars, over 70% are first generation and over 65% are students of color. The Goodrich Program is also proud of the diversity of its students with respect to rural/urban background, ability/disability, and sexual orientation.

Since 2008, the Thompson Learning Community (funded through the Buffett Foundation) has provided full-ride scholarships to students in financial need. Of the approximately 1150 current student scholars (1 out of every 9 undergraduates in the university), 65% are first generation and over 65% are students of color.
