Visiting Scholar in Ethics and Technology, Phillips Academy Andover

12/21/2019

Phillips Academy seeks a talented, interdisciplinary-minded Visiting Scholar in Ethics and Technology with interests in philosophy, computer science, and design for a two-year position exploring the intersections of ethics and technology with our students and faculty. The two-year appointment will begin in September of 2020. Minimum requirements include demonstrated success in teaching at the secondary or university level and a demonstrated commitment to writing and public-facing scholarship.

The role has three main components: teaching, mentoring, and writing.

Teaching

Responsibilities include teaching two classes per term in philosophy in our Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies. We expect the visiting scholar to teach courses at both the tenth- and twelfth-grade levels of our program. Opportunities for interdisciplinary teaching with faculty from other parts of campus are also very likely.

Mentoring

The successful candidate will support student and faculty projects currently developed through the Tang Institute and The Nest, Andover’s Makerspace. In particular, this person would work closely with Tang Fellows involved with an ethics and computer science project that brings together faculty teaching philosophy, robotics, and computer science. Similarly, this role provides support to student projects with a focus in these areas.

Writing

The successful candidate will help the Tang Institute fulfill its mission of sharing and spreading the best ideas with regard to teaching and learning. Through the use of traditional and online publishing platforms, this role will help cultivate a robust learning community of teachers interested developing curricular materials that integrate ethics, robotics, and computer science.

Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Please visit our application portal to submit a cover letter (addressed to Mr. Jeffrey C. Domina, Dean of Faculty, Phillips Academy), résumé, and two letters of reference.

Phillips Academy is an intentionally diverse and inclusive residential community. Although the visiting scholar position is not a residential faculty position, please address directly in your cover letter your experience and interest in working in an intentionally diverse and inclusive school community. We welcome applications from individuals who identify with groups typically underrepresented in independent school settings.

Phillips Academy is an equal opportunity employer. Any offers of employment will be contingent upon successful CORI/SORI and fingerprinting background checks as well as authorization to work in the United States.
