The Department of Philosophy at the University of Tennessee Knoxville invites applications for Head of the department, areas of specialization open. We are looking for an individual with a distinguished record of research, excellent teaching, and relevant service or administrative experience. Strong leadership skills and the ability to work effectively, collaboratively, and inclusively with colleagues, staff, and students are especially important. The successful candidate will oversee a department with 30 tenure- and non-tenure track faculty, 25-30 graduate students, and approximately 80 majors. The Knoxville campus of the University of Tennessee is seeking candidates who have the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals of the University. Duties and Responsibilities: The head is responsible for care of the academic program through recruitment and development of the faculty, including recommendation for hiring, promotion, and salary increases; assignment of courses; assignment of office space; development and review of the curriculum; encouragement and support of faculty teaching and research; encouragement and support of faculty in departmental and university service; representation of the department in the college and university and in the community outside the university. The head is also responsible for support of the academic program through employment and supervision of support staff personnel, management of departmental physical facilities and equipment, preparation and defense of the departmental budget, and authorization of any expenditure from the departmental budget. Finally, the department head is responsible for endowment funds in the department, and working with the College Advancement Office to cultivate donors in support of the department mission. The head is supported by staff to accomplish these responsibilities. New heads receive training from the College of Arts and Sciences and mentorship from other heads in the Division of Arts and Humanities. Qualifications: Required qualifications: Must have a PhD, teaching and service credentials, and a body of research appropriate for appointment to the rank of Full Professor in our department. They must demonstrate evidence of leadership on committees, in departmental or program administration, on association boards, or the professional equivalent. Advanced Associate Professors will be considered as long as they are eligible for Full Professor upon appointment. The Department of Philosophy at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for a tenured position, rank Associate Professor or Professor, beginning Fall 2025. Rank will be determined at time of appointment and assistant professors with credentials appropriate for appointment at the associate rank will also be considered. This will be a joint position with the School of Data Science. AOS: Ethics and Data Science, broadly construed, with research and teaching interests in areas such as (but not limited to) privacy, model transparency, explainability, public trust, algorithmic fairness, data and social justice (including approaches traditionally underrepresented in the field such as feminist, queer/trans, non-Western, etc.), data and migration, environmental issues, or related questions for artificial intelligence. AOC: Open, but candidates should be able to teach the required ethics class for graduate students in Data Science and to co-teach in the undergraduate “Data and Society” studio course. The successful candidate will have a tenure home in the Department of Philosophy, with a workload split of 51% in Philosophy and 49% in the University’s interdisciplinary School of Data Science.
In addition to the required AOS above, candidates must: (1) have a doctoral degree in philosophy or a related discipline (such as Science & Technology Studies) at the time of appointment; (2) provide evidence of scholarly activity appropriate for a tenured position in a philosophy department; and (3) provide evidence of successful teaching. Finalists will be asked to discuss how their teaching practices engage, include, and eliminate barriers to learning for UNC Charlotte students, and how their educational approach helps increase the engagement and success of all students regardless of their entry pathway into the university. A record of publication in peer-reviewed journals and/or extramural funding appropriate to rank at appointment is required. Workload for research intensive faculty is two courses per semester, at all levels (including graduate seminars), plus typical service duties. Salary competitive. Our department embodies an inter-traditional approach to philosophy; we engage in work within and between philosophical traditions, aiming to build a philosophical culture where sub-disciplinary boundaries are less important than the resources traditions provide for addressing concrete practices and problems. The philosophy department offers a major and minor, a Graduate Certificate in Applied Ethics, and an M.A. in Ethics and Applied Philosophy. The School of Data Science (SDS) (https://sds.charlotte.edu/) is an interdisciplinary unit housed in the College of Computing and Informatics (CCI). Established in January 2020, it was the first School of Data Science in the Carolinas. Currently, the SDS offers a Bachelor of Science in Data Science, an undergraduate certificate in Sports Analytics, and two Master of Science programs (Data Science & Business Analytics and Health Informatics & Analytics). The SDS is planning to launch a data science PhD program in Fall 2025, pending final approval from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). The SDS teaches and researches methods to apply statistics and computer science techniques to develop data-driven solutions to real-world problems, including the ethical application and use of data in communication studies, business, healthcare, social sciences, transportation, engineering, and more. The School has grown quickly to more than 800 students, half of them graduate students, and it is continuing to evolve with the needs of the students, university, and community. Currently, the school has approximately 80 full time, joint, and affiliate faculty. The Philosophy Department of Southern Methodist University seeks to fill a full time Lecturer position beginning August 2025. One year contract, renewable.
